Fingers crossed, your luggage will arrive safely in Athens when you do. However, if it doesn’t, the first thing you’re going to be doing is replacing your holiday/vacation wardrobe. But if you’re looking for large sizes, you might not find them desperately easy.
This guide is for you if you’re travelling to the country and need top-up or replacement items. Or if you recently moved to Athens and are looking for places to shop in everyday life.
👗I’ve given details below of where you can find the stores. But see this post for more information about shopping in Athens.
MAT Fashion
MAT is a chic Greek brand and the first plus-sized fashion company in Greece. In 2021, it won the title of Plus Size Brand of the Year, and when I popped in to get photos, the team was friendly and helpful, too.
Their Flagship store is at 74 Ermou, conveniently close to the other shops on this list. If you’re around the port, there’s a store in Piraeus. You’ll also find them in Glyfada along the Athen’s Riviera as well as in several of the city’s shopping malls.
MAT caters for Greek sizes 48 – 58 (UK 12 – 22 / US 8 – 18) and you’ll find everything you need to restock your holiday/vacation wardrobe. They have everything you’d expect, from sundresses to swimwear, as well as underwear, shoes and accessories.
There was a beautiful resort wear collection being advertised in the spring and everything seems to be of good quality. Some of their pieces are quite pricey, but they have moderately priced items, too.
Ermou store opening times: Monday – Friday 9:30 – 21:00 and Saturday 9:30 – 20.00. Sunday, closed.
N.B. This post’s featured image on the blog is from MAT’s Ermou store.
Still deciding What to Pack and Wear For Greece?
Take out the guesswork and make sure you have everything you need and nothing you don’t for your trip to Greece in spring, summer or fall.
Cotton Club Dimitri
Wearing one of the bright designs I found at Cotton Club Dimitri at a newspaper photoshoot!
For more Greek plus-size fashion, head to Cotton Club Dimitri.
There are several shops selling linen clothing in the touristy parts of the city, and a lot of people like to take these pieces home as souvenirs. But this store has a more unique range and sells larger sizes than I’ve found in the others.
Many of the pieces are in muted, neutral colours, but you will find some bright colours there, too.
Again, the clothes aren’t cheap so if you’re buying a few things ask for their best offer. I bought two dresses a couple of summers ago, and they offered me a discount without me asking.
You can find them at Adrianou 84, and I think they have a second small shop further down the street. The stores stock clothes for both men and women.
Adrianou store opening times: 10am until evening, Monday to Sunday (subject to change).
Parabita
Parabita is a Greek plus-sized clothing company for women. Although they stock casual wear, I find their styles a bit more formal/smart. They have swim/beach wear as well as dresses, skirts, tops and jackets.
I was trying to find out what size they go up to, but the woman I spoke to was rather evasive. The website lists XXXL on their size conversion chart, but the lady said XXL, which is a UK 24/US 20 and larger than a UK XXL.
One thing I’ve disliked about shopping here in the past is that the changing rooms don’t have mirrors. You have to come out and look at yourself in the mirror in the shop. But since they only do exchanges and no refunds, take the time to try bits on. Their stuff is on the expensive side if you end up with something you can’t wear.
There’s a store at 45 Ermou in the centre of Athens, close to one of the branches of H&M. It’s at the Monastirki end and marked on Google Maps. You can also find Parabita in Pireaus, Glyfada (southern suburb) and in shopping malls like Smart Park close to Athen’s Airport.
Ermou store opening times: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday: 10:00 – 20:00, Tuesday and Thursday: 10:00 – 21:00, Sunday closed.
Marks and Spencer
Good old Marks and Sparks, British institution, make the list, too. Their plus-size pieces go up to a UK size 24/US 20. And they usually have clothes up to that size in the physical store, not just in the online store.
Having said that, if they don’t, they offer next-business-day delivery in Athens if you order by 12 noon. (Expect slightly longer delivery times if you’re in Athens over the holiday season or other busy times of the year.)
M&S items are generally regarded as fairly high-quality clothes, and you can get everything from underwear and swim/beach wear to everyday casual pieces to suits and occasional wear for special events.
You can also pick up shoes, coats, bags and other accessories.
The main store is on Ermou Street, but you can also find branches in other neighbourhoods. It’s useful to note that M&S in Greece do issue refunds, which isn’t the case with all clothing franchise stores.
Ermou store opening times: Monday to Friday 9:00 – 21:00, Saturday 9:00 – 20:00, Sunday 11:00-20:00.
Cossinelle
I stumbled across the Greek company Cossinelle on my way back from an errand. There’s a branch close to Overall if you’re ready for a baked treat and Anana Coffee if you want to try one of the best coffees in Athens.
Depending on your taste, you might find something in here you like. I thought they had some pretty summer dresses. The sizes go from 1 – 6, which is around a UK 18/US 14 up to UK 28/US 24.
Find branches in Athens at 28 Agiou Markou (near the food and drink places above) and 27 Evangelistrias, as well as in Piraeus. Opening times for all are Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 10:00 – 17:00 and Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10:00 – 21:00. Closed on Sundays.
H&M
Some of Hennes‘ ranges go up to an XXL, which I’ve found to be around a UK 18 – 20/ US 14-16. This international chain seems to have a constant stream of new arrivals, so it’s best to check in-store that anything you’ve seen online is available.
While the brand doesn’t offer the most high-quality clothes, and a lot of them have more of a see-through look than I care for, you’ll be able to find something summery to wear on Kamari Beach or to see the sunset if you’re heading onto the Greek Islands.
They also stock underwear, exercise kit and casual items depending on the season.
There are several stores around the city centre, including at the top of Ermou, near Syntagma Square. You can also find stores at Piraeus, near the port and at the Smart Park near Athens Airport.
Ermou store opening times: Monday to Friday 9:00 – 21:00, Saturday 9:00 – 20:00, Sunday closed. To view the website in English, open it in Google Chrome.
Zara
Zara is another high-street staple that runs to an XXL (and even XXXL) in certain lines. Clothes here are usually made from better quality fabrics than H&M, but similarly, the latest items seem to rotate quickly.
You’ll have plenty of options to replace your lost luggage with casual items, twin sets, maxi dresses, shoes and accessories.
Conveniently, you can find Zara at 11 Ermou with the other well-known chains. But there are lots of branches in the city, as well as at the Smart Park close to the airport. Use Google Maps to find the closest one to you.
Ermou store opening times: Monday to Friday 9:00 – 21:00, Saturday 9:00 – 20:00, Sunday closed.
Mango
Mango’s plus-size clothes range isn’t stocked in their Athens stores. However, if you’re in the city for long enough, you can order online. If you place an order before 12 noon, you can get your items within 1 – 3 working days.
Ermou store opening times: Monday to Friday 9:00 – 21:00, Saturday 9:00 – 20:00, Sunday 12:00 – 20:00.
Tourist Shops
There are lots of touristy shops around Plaka and on the lanes on either side of Athinas Street. Some of them sell Greek-style dresses that are “one-size”. But they do accommodate larger tummies than you might think!
How to look like a tourist 101! One-size dress and I was about a UK 20-22 here.
The opening times for these shops vary, but usually they’re open from around 10:00 until 21:00 or 22:00. Some are open in the winter as well.
Big Shoes
If, as well as being large of body, you’re large of feet, you might just be in luck. I’m a Euro 44/45 (US 12-12.5/UK 9.5-10.5), and Athens has a dedicated store for those of us needing large-size shoes.
They do have about the best range of big shoes I’ve seen anywhere and a permanent sales section. You’ll find all types of styles: sandals, ballerinas, winter boots, heels, anatomical/comfort shoes, everything really. The only thing I can fault is that they don’t have many styles in wide fittings.
Big Shoes is a building on a street just off Ermou. There’s no shop front; you’ll only see the signage from the street. You have to go upstairs to the showroom (there’s a lift).
Don’t expect US-style service since you probably won’t get a warm welcome, but don’t take it personally. Persevere since your ultimate goal is to come out with what you need.
Store at Kornarou 1 (off Ermou) opening times: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 9:00 – 15:30, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00 – 20:30, Sundays closed.
Finding the Stores
All of these places are easy to reach on Athens’ public transportation and walkable from other popular attractions. One of my most used apps in Greece is Google Maps. You can download a map of Athens to use offline, although you’ll find wifi in plenty of places, too.
