There are certain products and services that I and others use over and over for travel in Greece. The vast majority of things here are things I use and love myself. A few of the items are ones that I know other people regularly enjoy using for their Greece visits, too.
Planning
Hotels and Accommodation
Booking.com – I use Booking for pretty much all my hotel accommodation. I often find hotels have discounts plus extra mobile-only discounts. Now that I’m a Genius Level 3 for booking several stays with them, I also get things like late checkout or free breakfast. I also find it really convenient having all my booking details in one place and you can contact the properties easily through the site too.
Airbnb – if I’m staying somewhere for longer, I’ve sometimes booked through Airbnb. It can be a nice way to experience Greek hospitality, but be sure to check reviews and avoid areas like Exarchia in Athens where it’s pushing out local families.
Transportation
ferryhopper – I love Ferryhopper! It’s easy to use and shows you all the major ferry options for each route. When you get your tickets through their site, they can store your journeys so everything’s in one place. And their app lets you track your ferry on travel day. 🎉
Skyscanner – this is another favourite of mine for finding flights anywhere in the world. Like ferryhopper, you put in the route (or even just the countries) you want to travel, and it’ll show you all options. You can search across the whole month, which is handy for finding the best fares. And you can use the filters to whittle results down to find exactly what you’re looking for.
Welcome Pickups – I’ve used this company several times for transfers in various places around Greece. The service is professional, the drivers speak good English, and rates are competitive. I also like that they contact you via WhatsApp, and they’re ok with me asking them not to come early. (Well, they still do, but they don’t contact me until the exact pick-up time🤩)
House and Pet Sitters
TrustedHousesitters – I’ve used this site to get free accommodation in Athens (as well as nearly 70 other sits) and to have other people look after my apartment and cats for free while I travel. You can get 25% off annual memberships with my code SUZIE25.
Trips and Tours
Manawa – this is the leading website to book outdoor and adventure activities. I like that they help local providers in Greece digitise their services. It’s easier for them to get bookings and simpler for you to discover activities and book online.
GetYourGuide – what I like about this site is you can see the reviews that others have left for each activity. I have booked several things through GetYourGuide on the islands and in Athens.
Airbnb Experiences – I often find fun and unusual activities on here, and the app is easy to use and book.
Apps to Use while in Greece
For information about the apps I use again and again while travelling here, you’re best to look at this separate post I wrote.
Insurance
SafetyWing – this company offers travel medical insurance, which is a good idea if you’re doing fun activities in Greece.
Mobile Photo Data
Airalo eSIM – get a digital eSIM to cover your data needs while travelling in Greece. It’ll help you use GoogleMaps, check bank apps securely and look up other info on your phone while you’re on the go.
What to Pack
Anti-Chafing Cooling Shorts – even if you’re lean, you can struggle with chaffing from all the walking you’ll do around Greece in your summer dresses and skirts. These are a lifesaver for a happy day out.
Collapsable Water Bottle – you must carry water with you in Greece since you’ll likely be really active. It gets hot, and many sites you’ll be visiting are exposed and without refreshments.
These collapsable water bottles are a bit odd to drink from to start with, but you’ll get used to them. And once you’re done, they fold down so they’re light and easy to carry. (And better for the environment than buying plastic plastic water bottles all day.
Cabin Luggage – you’ll need to check with the airline you’re travelling with to get details of their cabin baggage allowances. If you normally travel within the US, double-check the size and weight guidelines for hand luggage on any European flights you’re booking. I got this one and love the fact that it’s two-wheeled.
